Our natural tooth enamel is one of the strongest materials in the body, however it is not indestructible. Sometimes a sudden impact or erosion over time can greatly damage enamel and weaken the structure of the tooth. When this occurs, dental crowns are generally recommended as the best and most efficient methods of providing structural support to a damaged tooth.
What is a crown?
A dental crown, often referred to as a ‘cap’, is a restoration that fits over the damaged tooth to hold it in place and protect it from further damage. Crowns can be used for cosmetic purposes, such as concealing discolouration or improving the appearance of misshapen teeth, but generally we use them to restore teeth that are ‘at risk’ of further damage such as those with large worn fillings, cracks, cavities or weakened teeth from root canal treatment.
What should I expect when receiving a crown?
At Gentle and Caring Dentistry in Sydney we will take x-rays of your teeth to properly evaluate the tooth in question and determine if any other treatment is necessary prior to starting the process. If there is no other treatment required, we will then prepare your tooth to a proper shape so the crown can be bonded to the tooth. The general process will take three appointments which involve the consultation, preparation and then placement of the crown.

Preparation for your bridge will involve shaving down some of the teeth sitting adjacent to the site of tooth loss. This allows the bridge to be securely attached to the teeth for a complete dental restoration.
