I’m in Pain – But does this constitute a Dental Emergency?

Too many people suffer from untreated dental conditions which have developed after experiencing a dental emergency that they didn’t think constituted immediate attention…

So what is a dental emergency? How quickly should I consider treatment? If you don’t have the answers to these questions then this article is for you! At Gentle and Caring Dentistry in Maroubra we treat our urgent patients as soon as possible with the care and compassion they need.

What is a dental emergency?

A dental emergency could be anything really; most commonly our emergency patients are suffering from a tooth that is knocked out, chipped or broken. However a dental emergency could be anything from a severe toothache, to chronic pain in your jaw or within multiple teeth.

You may have a dental emergency if you are experiencing any pain in your mouth that requires urgent attention.

If you think you have a dental emergency we encourage you to contact our dental professionals here at Gentle and Caring Dentistry on (02) 9349 6668 right away. We recommend contacting our office sooner rather than later as the longer you leave a dental emergency the more work it may require to repair the problem. With all dental concerns it’s best to be safe than sorry!

The importance of seeking urgent attention

Your teeth are not stationary, (which is why we can use orthodontic treatment to align them) this means that when you lose a tooth it can cause your neighbouring teeth to shift and slide as a result. By delaying or completely avoiding treatment you are leaving yourself more susceptible to the following consequences:

  • Problems speaking
  • Difficulty chewing followed by nutrition problems
  • Aesthetically unpleasing
  • Self-consciousness about your chip, crack or gap
  • Stiff jaws and problems with relaxation
  • Weakening of surrounding teeth (because there are fewer teeth to use when you eat)

What to do in a dental emergency

If you think you may have a dental emergency we recommend contacting our team at Gentle and Caring Dentistry as soon as possible. For chipped, cracked or broken teeth we can fix your concerns with a simple bonding procedure. If your tooth feels sensitive because of your dental concern, we recommend avoiding hot or cold beverages while your tooth is waiting for treatment to ensure you are not causing more pain or damage to the tooth. In the case of complete tooth loss we have some simple steps that should help the situation.

There is a good chance we can save your tooth at Gentle and Caring Dentistry

For those patients who find themselves with a tooth missing, we encourage them to place the tooth back into the socket (after it has been rinsed in milk) before visiting our Maroubra office. If this cannot happy simply place it against the cheek in the side of your mouth. By following our care guide and visiting our team at Gentle and Caring Dentistry you can help increase the chance of your tooth healing back into your mouth without requiring further restorative treatment.

Repairing your tooth after an emergency

There are a couple of restorative treatments that we may use in the case of a dental emergency, dependant on the problem and severity. Often patients who have a dental emergency are experiencing a great deal of pain which is why we offer sedation dentistry. Our sedation technique uses nitrous oxide or laughing gas to ease our patients’ nerves and alleviate some of the pain. During your treatment we may be able to restore your tooth with a white filling or in more severe cases you may require a crown, bridge or even a dental implant. When you arrive we will assess your emergency and discuss potential solutions to restore your smile.

For more information about our emergency dental treatment or if you have a dental emergency please contact us at (02) 9349 6668 as soon as possible.

Great overall experience. My daughter had three visits to address her deep fissures. They always run on time, are friendly, and explain how the process will run and what should be expected. I highly recommend this dental practice, Dr Irani never disappoints.

Before I found Dr Irani I actively avoided going to the dentist. That's now a thing of the past thanks to her great skill and gentleness. I highly recommend her.
