Do I Need Root Canal Treatment ?

If you have been experiencing problems with a tooth you may wonder “Do I need a Root Canal treatment?”

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, is done on a tooth when the nerve or the pulp of the tooth becomes inflamed and infected due to dental decay, a cracked or broken tooth, or a traumatic injury to the tooth which has damaged the nerve.

Here are a few possible symptoms of the need for root canal treatment and how to deal with them-:

General possible symptoms that may indicate that a tooth requires a root canal treatment –

The most common symptom that May indicate the need for a root canal is tooth pain. The intensity of the pain can range from mild to a severe tooth ache.

The tooth may be sensitive to cold, but may also have prolonged sensitivity to hot foods or liquids. The pain may get worse when you bite down on the tooth; or it may increase at night or while lying down in bed.

Other symptoms include-:
swelling near the problem area in the gum and tenderness and redness in the gums.

Referred pain up to the jaw-joint or eye on that side of the face, and down towards the angle of the jaw and neck is also common. You may feel that all the teeth on that side of the mouth and face are aching and painful.

How to deal with severe toothache.

• Apply an icepack to the outside of your jaw.
• Avoid eating on that side but do continue to brush the area normally and also rinse with warm salty water.
• Sleep with your head sightly elevated or place an extra pillow under your head.
• Take anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen which are more effective than paracetamol.
