Feeling anxious or nervous about dental treatment?

Ask us about Nitrous Oxide (N2O) sedation.

If you are feeling anxious or nervous about your dental treatment, we can offer you Nitrous Oxide sedation to help you feel relaxed, calm and more comfortable during your dental procedure.

What is nitrous oxide sedation?

Nitrous Oxide also known as the Laughing Gas or Happy Gas is a mild sedative agent, which is used in small quantities and is mixed with oxygen. It is inhaled through a small mask which fits over your nose. It is very safe and effective. when used in a controlled setting, as in a dental clinic.

As it can be administered quickly and the effects are reversible, it is widely considered to be a safe sedation method.

How does it work?

Nitrous Oxide sedation is not intended to put you to sleep. You are full awake, but just feel more relaxed and calm and comfortable. It also gives you a feeling of Euphoria and well being. You will be able to hear and respond and still carry out a conversation with the dentist.

A small mask is placed over your nose and you breathe normally through your nose. Within a few minutes you should start to feel the effects.
You may feel lightheaded and tingling in your arms and legs, and feel nice and floaty.

Some people say their arms and legs feel heavy. All in all, ultimately you should feel very relaxed, calm and cozy!

How long does the feeling last

Soon after the dental treatment is completed, the nitrous oxide is turned off, and pure oxygen is administered to purge out any remaining gas from the lungs, while aiding the patient in becoming alert and awake. Within five minutes you will feel normal again.

Nitrous Oxide, when used in a controlled environment, like we do in the dentist setting, has no groggy or hangover effect, as maybe experienced after a general anaesthetic or other forms of sedation. It is usually safe to drive home.

It is suitable for all patients and especially effective in those that are nervous or anxious or have dental phobia or dental anxiety.
