Why your regular check-ups benefit you

bad breath, oral hygiene, emergency dentistry, periodontal disease, check-ups, scale and clean, decay, diseaseTaking care of your oral health is just as important for your body as having a balanced diet

Here at Gentle and Caring Dentistry in Sydney, Dr Roxanne Irani and her team can’t stress enough the significance of regular check-ups and how avoiding your six-monthly check-ups can have devastating effects not only on your oral health but on your overall health as well.

Maintain a healthy grin

In taking a gentle approach to your dental needs, Gentle and Caring Dentistry believe that communication is the key to maintaining positive oral health. Our professional team want to make sure you understand all the different factors that can affect your oral health and how your general health be effected if you don’t go to regular check-ups.

The beauty of your smile

Routine dental care isn’t just about brushing twice a day and flossing – although that is definitely a vital contributor. But by popping by the dentist every six months we are able to keep tabs on your oral changes and perform a routine scale and clean when necessary. Also with the use of technology such as digital x-rays and an intraoral camera, we can keep track of any teeth that need to be monitored for decay or cracks.

Pointing you in the right direction

Here at Gentle and Caring we genuinely care for your smile and want you to feel as confident about your natural grin as possible. During your check-up if we notice that your smile may be suffering from any negative hygiene habits, we will likely discuss this with you and support you by showing you some more effective cleaning measures that you could benefit from.

Your scale and clean

A scale and clean takes care to remove the build-up of plaque and tartar from your teeth. Tartar is a dangerous mixture of plaque and bacteria that has become hardened after time. Once it reaches this state, it can no longer be removed by simply brushing and flossing. Is left on the teeth tartar can eat away at your smile, destroying the enamel that protects your teeth and causing decay.

Boost your appearance

A scale and clean doesn’t only benefit your health, it also can result in whiter looking teeth where the plaque has stuck and stained your smile. So if you’ve been considering teeth whitening, you will likely benefit form a scale and clean first!

Taking care of your oral health

It isn’t just about your teeth! Showing up for regular check-ups gives our dental professionals the opportunity to monitor any gum changes. Periodontal (gum) disease is one of the most common causes of tooth loss, so by monitoring your gums we can provide a treatment plan to reduce symptoms and avoid tooth loss all together. Gum disease can be very serious, but by taking preventative measures it is also the most preventable disease.

How your gum health affects you

Gum disease has two stages, gingivitis and periodontal disease.

  • Gingivitis

Often times the initial symptoms could be that your gums bleed when you brush or your gums feel a little tender and swollen. This is generally recognised as gingivitis which in cases can lead to periodontal disease. Although gingivitis can be quite distressing, by practicing good oral habits with brushing, flossing and regular check-ups, your symptoms will likely go away.

  • Periodontal disease (periodontitis)

Periodontal disease, an advanced version of gingivitis, is very different to the treatment needed for a regular check-up. By avoiding your regular check-ups periodontal disease may not be recognised and this can result in some very serious problems.

Symptoms of gum disease:

  • Gums recede from the teeth
  • Pus may weep from the gums
  • Changes in your chewing ability could occur
  • Tooth loss
  • Bad breath

It doesn’t stop there. Having gum disease can change the overall structure of your face and can even lead to loss of life in extreme cases.

Your preventative challenge

Through regular check-ups we can assist you in achieving a healthy grin. Here are some preventative tips for your at-home care:

  • Replace your tooth brush if it starts looking old, every 3 months or after you have been sick
  • Use a soft toothbrush to lower your chances of damaging your enamel
  • Floss your teeth
  • Brush twice daily
  • Eat a healthy diet

There are a lot of ways you can help your smile stay healthy! But if you do notice changes in your gums, it’s important to ensure you come by our practice.
